Last week, the Internet couldn’t stop telling me that Kylie Jenner was a (very strong sarcastic airquotes) self-made (end airquotes) billionaire thanks to her makeup line.
Today I learned that Pat McGrath, a Black woman from the UK without a rich family on television, was raised by a single mother and later worked as a receptionist and booked makeup clients on the side, slowly building her reputation into the gold standard it is today. She’s been called the most influential makeup artist in the word (by no less than Vogue magazine) and her company has been valued at OVER $1 billion (Kylie’s is valued in the $800 million range).
Now, I don’t know when that billion dollar number became available for Pat McGrath. I do know Kylie started her company three years ago and Pat started hers two years ago, so they’re both still fresh out the oven. Maybe someone ran the numbers on Kylie before they did Pat.
But I promise you Forbes would not have thrown Kylie on their cover as a “self-made billionaire” if she wasn’t a pretty white Instagram girl. Pat McGrath’s billion dollar company will not be breathlessly reported on by every news outlet with a cover story by a major magazine being rehashed by countless online blogs.
So that’s what I’m mad about today. What y'all mad about?
